Meet the makers

Christian & Julie

Copenhagen siblings Christian Adel Michael and Julie Kronstrøm came up with MATE out of a shared passion for the bike. Their goal was to create an affordable, foldable, e-bike that is not only fun to ride but is cool enough to inspire everyone to hop onto one. With Christian’s natural-born entrepreneurial skills, combined with Julie’s business development and project management talents, their segue into realizing their dream has been an enormous success.

MATE X is much more than an upgrade. It’s a completely new bike. A bigger, and longer frame that is fitted with wide-rim fat tires. Its color scheme is fittingly more bold and extreme.

New colors are Subdued Black (Matte), White Ice, Burnt Orange, Desert Storm (Matte) plus a FOUNDERS EDITION special "Unicorn" coating.

For the MATE X, we've wiped the board and made an entirely new color scheme that fits the obvious, physical boldness of the bike's design. We want the coat to be an extension of what the MATE X expresses and embodies: More freedom, more attitude, less beaten paths.

The new MATE X boasts a much more powerful motor of up to 750W combined with an impressive 48V battery and controller across all models. The two combined returns significantly increased torque – and a big WOW! when you feel it.

We’ve geared up by introducing a Shimano 8-speed cassette with improved easy-gear shifting. The new computer display is equipped with a backlit LED as standard. We also offer the option to upgrade to a SMART beautiful display in color (pictured) for only 99 USD (149 USD value).

The foldable pedals are an entirely new designpackaged in a more sturdy pedal frame for improved power-transfer.

We’ve also upgraded to Tektro braking system, including levers and calipers, for quicker, more efficient stopping power. We’re currently offering hydraulic braking systems for $129 USD upgrade for smoother braking that requires less braking force.

As always, the MATE X is foldable in 3 easy steps to reduce its volume. It folds down to a very compact 78 cm high, 103 cm long, 59 cm wide. (Unfolded: 124 cm high, 180 cm long, 65 cm wide)This means you can bring it along anywhere you want to turn everywhere you go into an adventure!

Riding the saddle of success

With the help of each one of you, the backers, the first MATE did really well. We're extremely proud of being theworld's best funded foldable bike ever. But what really makes a difference for us is the fact the we've made many thousands more jump on a bike. Actually, it just goes to show what a lot of people all over the world can do if they pull together.

That's what keeps us going - through the hard times where we’ve really dealt with a lot. And by coming out the other end of it, we are stronger, more motivated and more prepared to take the Mate Bike brand to an entirely new level. We are excited to bring all that we’ve accumulated over the last couple of years back to you in the form of MATE X.

Experience has improved production

A wise man once said that you need to fail hard before you can succeed. Although we haven't quite hit rock bottom, we definitely have been challenged hard during the last campaign. At times it's been tough, but we've learnt from our mistakes and used the experiences to avoid repetition. In particular, we’ve nailed two key areas the last year - manufacturing and logistics.  

We're now ready and confident that all touch-points from ordering to delivery will live up to expectations.

Our goal is set. Let’s reach it together.

We’re done with prototyping  and are currently optimising parts, configurations and logistics. To start up the production, we have set a goal of $50,000 for this campaign. We want to take this bike to the next level and get even more people out on the saddle.

With this said, everyone who helps us in the making of the next MATE eBike, will get it at less than 1/2 the retail price – and will be the first to be offered exclusive, premium perks as well as VIP access to the upcoming webstore.

We are MATE family

Since the last campaign, we’ve worked very hard on improving every aspect of our company. We’ve built an order- and customer service system from scratch. We are training our support team to handle the huge demands, as well as preparing them for future challenges. We have learnt our lessons (dearly!) and have employed help in most areas. Our Mate family now totals 10 full-time members, all pulling their weight and making things happen. We’ve invested in a MATE Lab, where we test the bikes, including components, to work on improvements. Adding an in-house mechanic has certainly helped as well as providing valuable feedback for MATE moving forward.

You're much more than a customer

We’re not only building a bike or a brand, but rather seeding a community of encouragement while we grow our company along with our backers. We’re constantly improving both the bikes and our own performances, listening to and seriously taking in feedback.

In essence, our bikes are made by each one of you! THIS is and always will be our fundamental mission to accomplish - making the best MATE’s for everyone.
